How Crown Security Secured SecondBite’s New Perth Warehouse from Day One
When SecondBite opened the doors to its new Perth warehouse in Kewdale, the site needed to be secure from the moment operations began. Crown Security was brought in to make that happen, delivering a complete commercial security system for a facility that was ready to operate before its internet connection was in place.
About SecondBite’s New Kewdale Facility
SecondBite is a national food rescue organisation that collects surplus food from supermarkets, producers, and farmers and redirects it to Australians experiencing food insecurity. Their WA operations had outgrown the previous Belmont site, and with the support of a $1.2 million Lotterywest grant, SecondBite moved into a new 2,000 square metre warehouse in Kewdale, five times the size of the site it replaced.
The new facility was built to significantly increase the volume of food SecondBite can rescue and distribute across WA. The WA team already rescued more than 4.5 million kilograms of food the previous year. The Kewdale warehouse gives them room to grow that figure by around one million kilograms per year, with new distribution routes opening up to regional and remote communities across the state.
For a site serving 91 charity partners, having security in place from day one was not optional.

The Challenge: Security Before NBN
As the Kewdale facility neared completion, the SecondBite team faced a situation that is common to new commercial builds: the site was ready to open, but the NBN connection was not yet live. For many new commercial properties, the fixed internet connection can take weeks to activate after the site is ready for occupation, leaving a gap that businesses often don’t plan for.
A new commercial site is at its most vulnerable during this handover period, when foot traffic from contractors, delivery drivers, and new staff is at its highest. For a facility handling millions of kilograms of goods each year, that risk was not acceptable. They needed cameras recording and the site secured before the doors opened, not weeks later when the fixed internet connection arrived.
What Crown Security Delivered
Crown Security supplied and installed a complete commercial security system for the Kewdale warehouse, including additional CCTV cameras, equipment, and a 4G backup network to keep everything running until the NBN connection was established.
The 4G network was the key piece. Rather than waiting for the fixed-line connection, Crown Security set up a solution that had the CCTV system fully operational from day one of installation, recording continuously and accessible remotely. When the NBN came online, the system moved across to the fixed connection without interruption.
The installation covered the full scope of the site, giving the SecondBite team clear visibility across the warehouse from the moment operations began.
The Result
The system gave SecondBite reliable protection through the final stages of the build, the handover period, and into the opening of the new facility. The team could focus on getting operations running, knowing the site was fully covered.
SecondBite’s State Manager for WA, Lyndon Nilsson, summed up the experience:
“Thank you immensely to Crown Security! Saverio and his team provided a brilliant service, their workmanship was superb!”

What This Project Shows About Security Planning for Perth Businesses
When selecting CCTV for a Perth business, the question is rarely just “what cameras do we need?” More often it involves working around the practical realities of the site: construction timelines, connectivity gaps, access requirements, and the need to be operational from a specific date.
The SecondBite project is a good example. The challenge was not the system specification but the timing. The site needed to be covered before fixed internet was available. A system designed with 4G backup from the start meant nothing had to wait.
Crown Security has been providing CCTV for Perth businesses since 1994. As an ASIAL Bronze Partner and Hikvision Platinum Partner, the team works with certified products backed by industry accreditations. Each project begins with a security risk assessment: a review of the site, how it operates, and what the requirements are before any equipment is specified. From there, the team manages installation, configuration, staff training, and ongoing maintenance.
Crown Security’s commercial systems support high-resolution recording in low-light conditions, remote access via app or cloud, integration with alarms and access control, and backup connectivity for sites where fixed internet is not yet available.
Security for Commercial Warehouses and Distribution Sites in Perth
Warehouses and distribution facilities have a specific set of security needs: large floor areas, loading zones with regular vehicle movements, goods held on site overnight, and periods where fewer staff are present. A well-planned CCTV system addresses all of these, with camera placement and recording settings configured to match how the site actually operates.
Crown Security services commercial clients across industrial, logistics, retail, healthcare, strata, and government sectors throughout Perth. Whether you are fitting out a new facility, moving premises, or reviewing your current coverage, the team offers obligation-free consultations and quotes.
Planning Security for a New Commercial Premises?
If you are moving into a new facility or managing a commercial fit-out, work through these points with your security installer before the move-in date:
• Confirm whether the NBN connection will be live before you open, and whether a 4G backup is needed in the interim
• Identify every entry point, loading dock, and after-hours access area that needs camera coverage
• Check whether any existing cameras or cabling on the site can be integrated or reused
• Establish who needs remote access to the system and on what devices
• Confirm what ongoing maintenance and support is included after handover
These are the starting points Crown Security covers in a security risk assessment before any equipment is specified.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a commercial security system be installed before NBN is connected?
Yes. Crown Security can install a CCTV system with a 4G backup network that keeps cameras running and recording from day one, even without a fixed internet connection in place. When the NBN connection is established, the system transitions across without disruption.
What does Crown Security install for commercial warehouses?
Crown Security installs CCTV cameras, alarm systems, and access control for commercial warehouses and distribution facilities across Perth. Each system is designed around the specific site, including loading docks, entry points, storage areas, and any zones that need monitoring outside of standard hours.
How does Crown Security approach a new commercial security installation?
Every project starts with a security risk assessment before any equipment is specified. From there, the team manages the installation, configuration, testing, and staff training, with ongoing maintenance available after handover.
